With technical terrain, relentless climbs and showstopping scenery, discover world-class trail running in the Lake District.
Running in the fells is a special sort of joy. Some might call it “type two” fun. Much of the time it’s just a hard slog to what feels like an unreachable summit, when everything in your body is telling you to stop. But in the moments when it all comes together, and you’re floating along an airy windswept ridge or racing down a heather-clad fellside, it’s pretty epic.
The challenge is simple: run to the top of Walla Crag and back again as fast as you can. Starting at The Round on Main Street, where many a nervous fell runner, including Bob Graham himself, has embarked upon their own challenge, this route is a fell race in miniature.
It begins fast through town before turning up Springs Road and onto the trails of Great Wood, then out onto the fell. If you’re still running at this point, dig in and choose your fastest line. Take a selfie on the summit and head back the same way.
Since we started in 2017, hundreds of Dashers have tested their speed against this great little fell. You can take on the challenge yourself any time, or join us for Walla Week in June, where all successful attempts are rewarded with a free pint at The Round and, probably more importantly, kudos from Nacho.
Beloved as a training route for generations of Keswick’s best trail runners, the 15km-ish route around the Glenderaterra valley, or Glenda, as it’s locally known, is a run for all seasons. It heads from Keswick out into the northern fells along a lower-level route that can still feel momentous as the fellsides of Lonscale and Blease plunge away towards the River Glenderamackin below you.
You can go in either direction; would you rather start fast along the Keswick to Threlkeld railway path like JB, or clockwise like Jodie, who always starts with the climb up Spooney Green Lane?!
Who hasn’t heard of Catbells? One of our most famous fells, this is a great little loop that can be easily adapted. Start at The Lingholm Kitchen and run out through the woodland towards Catbells End.
Skip the steep path that heads up to the summit, and instead skirt left onto the terrace path, a gently undulating trail with views towards the big fells of Borrowdale. Join the lakeshore path at Manesty for a relaxed run back and some well-earned refreshment.
Stay a ridge ahead of the weather. Conditions in the mountains can change in a flash. Be ready for rain, shine, hail and snow with our handy mountain kit list.
