Hiker with a large blue rucksack and walking poles standing on a rocky summit overlooking mountains

Mountain Kit List

  • Lightweight waterproofs. It’s the Lake District. No further comment.
  • Spare socks and blister plasters, especially if you don’t wear your hiking shoes or boots that much.
  • Map and compass. Or at least a way to see your route and where you are that doesn’t require mobile signal.
  • Food and more food. Hopefully you won’t get lost, but always prepare for your day out lasting longer than planned.
  • Water. There is often a source on the fell; just take it from running streams and ideally above any obvious sheep. Be sure to have water purification tablets on hand!
  • Bivvy bag. Can be a great way to hide from the rain for your mid-hike cuppa, or literally a lifesaver. Worth packing even if it never comes out of its packet.
  • Extra layer. Layers, layers and more layers.
  • Mobile phone for the photo ops and emergencies!
  • And for the cyclists… a puncture repair kit. Beware the potholes.
  • A plan for your post-adventure pint. No good day out is complete without proper provision for a liquid-based reward.
