Our Favourite Post-Walk Pubs Near Keswick

Nothing beats wrapping up a great day on the fells like sitting by a roaring fire with a pint in hand. These are our personal favourites, the very pubs we head to ourselves, each waiting right at the end of an unforgettable walk.

Walkers gathered outside The Swinside Inn, a white country pub beneath green hills and an overcast sky.

The Swinside Inn, Newlands

If you’ve walked around the Lake or come down off Catbells, then the glorious Swinside Inn is waiting at the bottom. It's an old inn that has been lovingly restored, with a big beer garden that has great views of the fells. The food is excellent value, and the welcome is always friendly.

The Coledale Inn, Braithwaite

Braithwaite lies just west of Keswick and is the starting point for the Coledale Horseshoe, an excellent loop of the northwestern fells before the land drops down the coast. The Coledale Inn sits on the edge of the village. It has a fabulous beer garden, and the descent off Outerside to the pub makes you feel like you could conquer anything.

The Yew Tree, Borrowdale

Operated by the team that owns the Honister Slate Mine, this pub blends a youthful spirit and high standards with ancient architecture. The Borrowdale Valley’s history is as dramatic as its landscape. Ever since a 16th-century storm exposed its rich graphite reserves, this valley has captivated the nation. In the 1700s, graphite was one of the world’s most valuable commodities, and Borrowdale had the only major mine. Where there’s money, there are smugglers, and graphite theft became so serious that armed guards were needed. Today, the only guards are the fells, and this pub remains the perfect spot to reward yourself with a post-hike Sunday roast.

The Kirkstile Inn, Loweswater

The Kirkstile Inn is around 400 years old and sits between Crummock Water and Loweswater, looking straight at Mellbreak. It's the original home of Loweswater Gold, which is still on the bar. Possibly our favourite pub of them all, there is such character and a feeling of having found something special once inside that you won’t want to leave.
