Our Favourite Views Near Keswick

With its striking mix of soaring peaks, spectacular lakes, and deeply wooded valleys, Keswick offers the ultimate landscape. There are too many magnificent views to choose from, so we asked four of our team to pick their favourites.

Rocky hillside overlooking a lake and autumnal valley beneath a dramatic cloudy sky

Carla – Friar’s Crag

The perfect flat Keswick 5K takes you from the town past the Theatre by the Lake and along the lake shore before looping back along the trail next to Borrowdale Road. There are many amazing viewpoints, and the most famous is probably the best. Friar’s Crag makes you feel like you’re right out in the middle of Derwentwater looking up at the surrounding fells. As a Keswick resident, I feel very lucky that this is just five minutes from the centre of town.

Jodie – Low Fell

Park your car in Thackthwaite near Loweswater village and hike to the top of Low Fell, which takes about an hour. The joy of Low Fell is it’s quite low! There are amazing views of so many famous fells, Fleetwith Pike, Great Gable, Grasmoor and also out to the sea. Afterwards it is just a five-minute drive to the fabulous Kirkstile Inn.

Autumn trees and a boathouse beside Derwentwater, with sunlit Catbells rising beneath dramatic clouds.

Mol – Fellpack Skiddaw view

This is an obvious choice, I know, but I don’t think the view from our hotel can be beaten! Fellpack Skiddaw’s south-facing garden looks out to nearly seventy Wainwrights. With a cocktail in hand, one starts to feel quite ambitious about where the next adventure will start, but then the cocktails keep calling: just one more!

Elvis – Latrigg bench

Little Latrigg, which sits just above Keswick, takes a mighty effort to run up. A five-minute rest at the top lets you catch your breath and admire the incredible Derwentwater valley. It’s arguably the best view in the Lake District for the amount of effort it takes to get there.
