Keswick – the home of trail running

Welcome to our hometown. Fellpack Keswick sits right on The Heads, just a couple of minutes’ stroll from the market square. Fellpack Skiddaw rests just outside town on the flanks of Skiddaw itself.

Keswick is the undisputed capital of the UK trail running scene, packed with leading outdoor shops to supply all the gear you need (and plenty you probably don't!). In fact, the iconic brand Montbell chose Keswick over London's Bond Street for their very first UK shop. Beyond the trails, discover the famous Theatre by the Lake, hosting exceptional productions right on the water's edge, and the historic Alhambra Cinema, showing films since 1913, making it one of the oldest working cinemas in the country.

Enjoy a sunny afternoon at the Hope Park pitch-and-putt, wander through beautiful parks or head down to where Derwentwater laps gently against the edge of town. Even from the centre of Keswick, the views are amazing.

Keswick’s vibrant food and drink scene blends traditional Lake District inns with modern restaurants and bars. It’s a place constantly buzzing with holiday energy, so much so that locals from the coast all the way to Penrith make Keswick their go-to destination for a night out.

Borrowdale Valley – the peak-bagging paradise

Situated due south of Keswick, the valley of Derwentwater and its surrounding peaks are paradise. The classic 10-mile (16km) loop around the lake offers a magnificent, low-level valley walk, while the trails scaling the mountains on either side are perfect for high-altitude exploring.

Past the charming village of Grange at the southern foot of the lake, you pass through the dramatic Jaws of Borrowdale and enter the vale of small hamlets, Rosthwaite, Stonethewaite and Seattoller, all enclosed by giant peaks. This area serves as the ultimate base camp for epic hiking, with Scafell Pike and a multitude of exciting fells within easy reach. The local hotels feature welcoming bars specifically designed for unlacing your boots and decamping post-adventure, typically with roaring fires to counter Borrowdale’s famously wet microclimate. This is memory-making country.

Buttermere Valley – the place to propose

As you drop down the mountain passes into Buttermere Valley, you are hit with the realisation that this may be the prettiest place you have ever seen. Buttermere Lake is flawless, its shimmering surface framed by imposing peaks on all sides.

The lakeside path is the best 7k flat walk or run you’ll find, with uninterrupted views and an incredible sense of freedom. For hikers, the surrounding fells offer steep, challenging climbs that quickly reward you with epic vantage points. Among them is Haystacks, famously named by Alfred Wainwright as his favourite fell. Between its jagged ridges, tricky false summits, and spectacular views, it remains a crowning jewel of the Lake District.

Wasdale Head – the place to escape

The foreboding valley of Wasdale, England’s deepest lake, is a special, yet eerie place. It is rare to feel remote in England, yet as the sun sets and the shadows fall across the valley, this is a place to hunker down and prepare for the next day, a task made easier by the gloriously timeless Wasdale Head Inn.

Here, you can switch off your phone, leave the stresses of the modern world behind, and bask in the raw beauty of nature while the massive, 3,000-foot peaks of the Scafell range watch over you.
