Nestled between jagged peaks, windswept coastline and rolling countryside, golf in the Lake District is a winning combination of beautiful views and challenging terrain. Cumbria is blessed with over 30 golf courses, and, no matter where you visit, the welcome is always warm.
Our hotels lie two hours north of the famous Lancashire Open venues, Birkdale and Lytham, and two hours south of the Ayrshire classics Troon and Turnberry.
One of the UK’s leading links courses, Silloth is an absolute gem. Set along the wild Cumbrian coast, it is framed by gorse and heather and left completely at the mercy of the elements rolling off the Irish Sea. This is a true bucket-list golf course.
On a rare, windless day soaked in sunshine, the challenge can seem surmountable. Yet, when the gale blows and the rain hits, you’ll find yourself wondering if a 5-iron is enough club to survive the 120-yard, par-three 9th hole!
The experience tests your nerves from the very start. The tee shot on the 1st is always an epic, knee-knocking affair, featuring trouble everywhere you look and a full gallery of spectators watching your every move from the clubhouse windows behind.
Keswick Golf Club is worth the visit for the views alone, but don't let the scenery fool you; it is a proper test of skill and persistence. Club members reckon you should add three to five shots to your handicap just to survive here.
The trouble starts early. The 250-yard, par-three 2nd hole ensures you are unlikely to start your round strongly. Soon after, the brutal 4th hole uses the natural terrain to make a mockery of what you would ordinarily expect from a par four. Every single hole packs danger, the elements are always present, and the turf is always a little softer than you’d hope. Yet, when your aim points on blind tee-shots are distant mountain peaks, you know your camera is going to have a great time—even if your scorecard takes a beating.
A classic right on the doorstep of Fellpack Keswick, this nine-hole pitch-and-putt course sits in the heart of town. A popular tourist attraction, it is lovingly manicured and perfectly set up for golf purists. The holes range from 60 to 110 yards, offering stunning views of the surrounding Keswick fells along the way.
Our favourite stretch runs from hole 2 to hole 6. Because of the natural slope of the land, the greens are cut directly into the hillsides; if your ball ends up on the low side, you will need a deft flop shot to chip it back up.
Admission to the course is £7.50, which covers the rental of a wedge, a putter, and a ball. It’s great fun for golfers of every level. Our team have shot everything from 25 to 75!
